What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are of a flattened oval shape, and are about 6mm long. They are pale brown in colour when unfed, and reddish brown to mahogany when full of blood. The young bed bugs (nymphs) are almost colourless, becoming a brownish colour as they mature.
Where are bed bugs usually found?
Bed bugs feed on human blood & are attracted to heat which is why the warmth of a bed is so alluring to them. Bed bugs can be found in any crack or crevice including bed frames, head boards, mattress seams, wallpaper, chair seams, carpets, skirting boards etc. They are able to crawl up vertical surfaces of wood, paper & plaster, but are unable to crawl up smooth polished areas.
What are the signs of a bed bug infestation?
Bite marks on body (hard whitish swelling with a dark red spot surrounded by a reddened area).
Bed bug spots / fecal matter (dark reddish brown specks) on bedding, mattresses & furniture.
If the room is heavily infested you may smell an unpleasant almond odour.
